Websites and social media are making captives of online visitors. We are aware of the addictive nature of technology, internet and mobile devices. The latest admission comes from the Chief of Mozilla, Mitchell Baker.
Speaking at a web summit in Lisbon, Mitchell noted how the internet had developed a relation that was similar to that between slot machines and gamblers!
Mitchell referred to the big apps, big companies and big commercial players building systems that remind us of addictions. We know that the use of ‘gaming’ concept is pretty common while building such online systems.
The business aspect of the internet lies in attracting visitors, keeping them online for longer, making them click, and share information as much as possible. This data is then used to attract advertisers. Another aspect is that of tracking, and Mozilla offers an anti-tracking feature in the browser for user confidentiality.
